After having the weekend off, Jackson arrived at the hospital this morning to start another week of radiation treatments, but he was sent away because of equipment malfunctions. Now we’ll try to keep food off of his mind because he cannot eat or drink until after we go back this afternoon to try to complete his session. So far Lightning McQueen and friends are keeping his mind off food.
The IMRT radiation treatment is making him very tired. He's getting more and more worn out as the treatments continue. Some days he does o.k., but others he doesn’t even get up from wherever he is sitting. He’s not in a bad mood though, just very worn out.
His eating has been dwindling a bit. He’s surviving on Lay's potato chips, bananas, and milk. Everything else is “icky.” We think he’s either nauseous, or his taste buds are still messed up from the chemo, or both. He is the only person I’ve ever seen eat a bag of Lay’s while laying down, apparently without difficulty. Sometimes he gets greasy chip crumbs stuck down between his shoulders and his neck, but he doesn’t seem to mind.
It looks like Jack will also be in seclusion for a bit longer than we thought. We got word from his bone-marrow transplant doc that Jackson’s immune system is still very compromised from the transplant and that he will remain on the isolation precautions until at least the end of March, the soonest she thinks he may have recovered. She will re-evaluate him then. This means all of his current restrictions will remain in place until that time (including the anti-bacterial diet, avoiding public places, limiting visitors, strict avoidance of anyone who is or has been ill, etc.) He will continue with his antibiotic and immunoglobin infusions as well in an effort to support his immune system. As a practical matter, it just means that we won’t be able to get him around some of his friends and family as soon as we would have liked. In the meantime, the doctors are also referring us to other sub-specialists as well to address concerns regarding side-effects and potential side-effects of his surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Managing all of his treatment is very much like what I imagine it is like to be a general contractor. But it's also something we are fortunate to be able to be doing.
We wanted to put up a new picture to show off his new eyebrows, which are starting to come in, but we too are having technical difficulties this morning. This photo is from two weeks ago, before his started getting really tired. He was reading his big Curious George book and holding his brother’s pacifier. We’ll try to get a new picture up soon.

Hey there big guy...what an awesome picture of you!! I can see those eyebrows, and they are looking mighty nice (although you are as handsome as ever, even without them!) You have a lot of people always asking about you, there are many kids in the juvenile hall that always ask how you are doing and what the current updates are...(all of them love hearing about you, because it gets their mind focused on something else for a bit)! We hope you have a good day, and you are able to eat lots this afternoon!! We love you Jack and tell Whyatt we love him and miss him too! xoxo
What a great picture of you FlapJack. I love it, You looks sooo handsome. I am glad that you have found something that you like to eat. I like lays chips too. well, I love you. Keep up the good work. Hugs to WyWy too. Love, Miss Belinda
Just love the smile in that photo Jack! Glad to see it again. Hopefully that pesky equipment got fixed and you were able to eat!!
So the real breaking news is Texas Toast is out and Lays Potato Chips are in!! Hot of the presses Jackson backs a new snack food!!! Daddy should be very happy...no more picking off the green!!!
Keep up the fight and tell Wyatt, Mommy & Daddy, hello from us,
Patricia, Juan, Tommy & Nicky
Hey Jack....way to sport some new eyebrows big guy!!! We all love Lays potato chips too...Abigayle insists on having her own bag of sour cream and onion ones...or as she likes to call them “Geen ones”. Maggie says hi and that she can’t wait to play with you again. We’ll have to have a huge party for you when you can come see you again....Maybe we’ll throw a big bash for Maggie’s bday...We miss all of you and are really sad that we can’t spend the holidays with you....but we understand that you have to do what is best for Jack. You guys take care and give both Jack and Wyatt big hugs, wet kisses, and lots and lots of love from all of us Jobes in Elk Grove.
Hi Milkman,
Love the picture!!!!! As always you look marvelous and Im thinking you are taller too!!!!!!!
You know Auntie Poe Poe cannot eat just one lays pototoe chips but she doesn’t have the talent you do by laying down eating them and let me guess while watching “Cars”.
Just wanted to say Hi and love to you, brother and your Mom and Dad.
xo xo xo
Hey Jack! Brendan is sitting here admiring your baseball shirt in your picture. You look great! Uncle Greg had so much fun visiting you guys last week, and we were so happy to get a wonderful report on how you’re all doing!!
We miss you lots, but are willing to wait as long as it takes for you to get super-healthy. If you get the all-clear by April, maybe we can all celebrate Easter together. (Easter will be extra-special this year, too, because that is also your baby cousin Ryan’s 1st birthday!)
Tell Wyatt that Ryan is practicing his crawling and pulling up so they can chase around together this summer! Ryan loves bananas too, just like you. Maybe you can teach him about Curious George when you see him!
We love you guys lots and think about you all the time!!
Happy half-birthday, Jack! I’ve been celebrating my “4 1/2” birthday today, and we just realized it’s yours and Bailey’s half birthdays, too! (Tyler was practically born on June 18th--Eastern Time, so he should join us, too!)
I celebrated by making a fruit salad with half of every fruit--banana, orange, apple, and grape (we cut the grapes in half). Grandpa Pam showed me how to make it--maybe she can make yours with bananas and potato chips! I hope you’re having a fun day, too!
Love, Bren
PS This was dictated by Brendan, paraphrased by Aunt Lisa.
Eat a bag for us, Jackson!
Hi Jack
I hope you have a nice weekend. Hopefully you are not too tired to get some playtime in with Wyatt. Keep eating those yummy chips. We understand that we can not see you as soon as we had hoped. However, when the doctors say it is ok to play we will be right over!
***Hello to Keri, Kelly and Wyatt too! We send our best.
Hi Jackson,
I know we haven’t officially met but your Mom has shared so many adorable pictures of you. I just wanted to let you know that we are thinking about you everyday and think you are the strongest most beautiful boy! Hope you enjoy the toys we sent.
Love, Samantha, Eric, Jayson and Alexis.
