Texas Toast!
Jackson was discharged from the hospital.  He hasn't lost as much weight as you would think, given that he hasn't eaten in such a long time.  We have the UCSF to thank for that.  But even thought they kept him moderately healthy with the TPN (IV nutrition), he did not eat a single thing the entire time he was in the hospital.  So the plan became to get him home as soon as they got the TPN formulas calibrated correctly because we figured he would feel more comfortable and have quicker access to a wider variety of foods.  To ensure he's o.k., though, they have sent us home with more gadgets as usual, more training as usual, and we can now give him his TPN (IV nutrition) at home over a 12-hour period each day.  Our plan began working a bit faster than we expected.  We weren't home for more than a few hours before Jackson cautiously nibbled at a piece of "Texas Toast," which is basically a freezer food section frozen garlic bread.  Ultimately, he ate virtually the entire piece.  There was only one problem: like many pieces of garlic bread, "Texas Toast" has small green herbs mixed in on the garlic part of the bread.  Although they are tasteless, Jackson decided the toast was good, but the green parsley was "icky."  He began telling his mother, "No green."  Therefore, Keri had to sit and pick off every piece of parsley--but it was worth it.  He may not have eaten very much, but he did not throw up, and he goes to bed tonight with something in his stomach.  And that's good, because it's hard enough battling the cancer let alone the treatment.  Tomorrow morning, we'll be up making "fatty cakes" (pancakes with extra fattening additives) in the hopes that he can keep it up.  Thank you for your messages, we enjoy hearing from everyone.

Jack, When I was at Michigan Texas Toast was my favorite thing to eat, if only you could get the Cajun pork chops that the grocery store had to go with the toast you would have one good meal..Uncle Jeff

Good work on the Texas Toast Jackson (and mom!)!  And I bet the fatty cakes were delicious.  Pancakes are Libby’s favorites for breakfast, too!  Keep up the good work.  We miss you and think about you often, and hope to see you soon.

Hi Jack,

We’re so glad to hear you found something yummy!  We bought a big box of Texas Toast one summer, and your cousin Evan devoured it!  (Aunt Lisa would’ve too if it hadn’t been so fattening--but perfect for little guys like you!)

We think of you every day, and we love your pictures!  We’ll keep sending some out your way, too.  Keep it going, and tell Wyatt how much we love you both!

Way to go, Jack-man, keep chowin’ down!!  No time for green stuff on Texas Toast - just bring on the cheese.  Keep up the good work (I’ll bet your dad can show you how to eat those fatty-cakes 3 at a time).  Miss you guys a bunch.
